CAFFA- After millions of illegal ballots were counted last week following the province's referendum vote, the results indicate that those who voted overwhelmingly supported independence -- with approximately 89% voting to withdraw from the NSE, albeit an estimated voter turnout of 48%.
The fiery Caffan people celebrated in the streets last night, professing a new era in the city's long history and its freedom after nearly a century of Imperial rule. However, the festivities were soon overshadowed by the arrival of the Imperial Armed Forces; forces were stationed in the city to reassert the NSE's presence. Among the terrestrial presence was also a series of aggressive flyovers by a squadron of Imperial C-23 fighter jets, which the NSE Ministry of Defense denies the deployment of.
There is plenty of photographic evidence clearly depicting the presence of C-23 jets.
In response to the NSE's refusal to grant independence, Caffa has turned to other nations in the Shire, seeking help and recognition. Allies of the New Sammichian Empire have made it clear they will not recognize Caffa as a sovereign nation, and the NSE's position on the Shire United Nations Security Council will make it even more difficult for the province to gain recognition. States such as the Venezian protectorate of Riverwood and the Republic of Orange and Purple, however, have expressed their support for the independence movement and their willingness to recognize the province as a free nation.
Meanwhile, tensions have reached a critical height with the Imperial establishment, which still considers Caffa a part of its territory. High Chancellor Ritz-Khalifa called for the permanent dissolution of the provincial chancellery and emergency elections later this month. Voting and the subsequent results will be enforced by the IAF and the Emperor, who retains direct control of the city as a result of chancellery's suspension. The NSE has also been forced go on the offensive, dissuading other nations from supporting Caffa. It has imposed tough sanctions on the Republic of Orange and Purple, as well as an outright embargo on Riverwood. The Emperor and the Ministry of Justice has requested the extradition of the five Caffan legislators accused of spearheading the referendum bill from Laurelian. They all face criminal charges of treason in the NSE. Historically-strained relations between the two countries may prevent Laurelii cooperation, forcing the NSE to "extract" the perpetrators. This method was used in 2007 after former Magistrax Militae agent Caeto Vespanus was accused of selling confidential information to foreign powers; after Riverwood refused to return him to the NSE, he was allegedly kidnapped by former fellow Magistrax agents and transported back to Fulfwotz.
As for former Caffan Chancellor Leopardo Sciarra, his trial before the 1st District Court of Fulfwotz is set for January 15th. He was released on bail of $150,000, yet has been placed under house arrest in his Fulfwotzian Feverly Hills residence.

DE REPUBLIEK FACES SANCTIONS! PM SCRAMBLES GRAND FLEET! COMES TO AID OF INDEPENDENT CAFFA!
Just days after the new year, The Caffan referendum ended in a vote to secede from the NSE. The vote was immediately followed by Sammichian action to occupy the city, stationing a new squadron of fighter jets and several regiments of elite soldiers within the population centers. The Embassy of Oranje and Paars in Fulfwotz, meanwhile, has been shut down and its ambassador has gone into hiding.
After learning of sanctions imposed upon the Republic, the Prime Minister has ordered immediate mobilization of the Navy and Air Corps. The Army has meanwhile landed paratroopers and seaborne marines overnight to secure Chiffur and Activia, and Little Wangleton has been blockaded by land and sea.
"We have not been friends to the Caffans in the past," spoke Prime Minister Wuggeh to the crowd gathered in Britannia square in South Paarsdam, "but today we have a duty as a sovereign nation of the Shire to protect the sovereignty of another people who face oppression at the hands of an oligarchic, autocratic regime, an we must ask ourselves as citizens of the Republic, and the descendants of Britannia: Will we continue to live in the shadow of 1676, or will we rise to aid the Caffans on their journey of independence?"
A thunderous applause rocked the square as civilians flocked to volunteer stations to enlist in the reserve forces. The jets then roared overhead, as they flew out to the aircraft carriers waiting in the Western Sea. The Prime Minister signed a measure shifting the factories of South Paarsdam to the production of war materials, and another embargoing all Sammichian goods, and instead favoring those of Sol. He continued to push that he is not interested in war, but rather respect for the due process of law and the desired sovereignty of Caffan civilians.
At this, fellow Republicans, we must march for freedom, at whatever the cost. Onward, Children of Britannia! We Sail for Caffa!6 -
LAURELIAN-
The Laurelian Nation remains "business as usual" in the wake of Caffa's vote to secede and the NSE's subsequent military deployment to the small territory. When pressed for comment, Noviem Ildies, Press Secretary to Laurelian's governing council, The Kiinthira, had this to say:
The Laurelian Nation remains neutral, as always, in these unfortunate squabbles between nations - and apparently within them, now. The NSE would do well to remember that Laurelian is a no-extradition nation and has no plans to either reveal or extradite anyone of any nation who arrives on our shores seeking sanctuary. While we've been known to have logistical difficulties in receiving those accused of abhorrent crimes, leaving them outside of our borders, that would not be the case for any political refugees - if we received any at all.
We can neither confirm nor deny the arrival of the five accused Caffan legislators into Laurelian territory. Quite frankly, we grow increasingly bored of this unceasing desire for Shire nations to participate in these wasteful and juvenile war games. Should the NSE wish to test the force of Laurelian's Peacekeepers with an illegal extradition, then so be it. Attempts have historically resulted in embarrassing failure on the part of the offending party and mere fun training exercises for our junior enlisted Peacekeepers.
At this time, current resources will allow for Laurelian to receive up to 8,000 refugees from this absolutely inane conflict and will give them temporary, limited citizenship in the Portsmouth district of Laurelian. Those needing to enter the city to receive medical treatment at the UoL Teaching Hospital will be handled on a case-by-case basis. We pledge to send aid in the form of food, clothing and medical assistance to those who cannot leave areas affected by this barbaric straight-to-Netflix production of Unevolved Humans part 16.
Though I'm certain this urging will fall on willfully ignorant deaf ears, I find myself having to at least try. Please. For the sake of your own futures and the sanity of the Laurelii, please consider settling difference with just a modicum of tact and integrity. We promise it won't kill you to do so.
