Caffa Votes To Secede From NSE; Seeks Help From Abroad

CAFFA- After millions of illegal ballots were counted last week following the province's referendum vote, the results indicate that those who voted overwhelmingly supported independence -- with approximately 89% voting to withdraw from the NSE, albeit an estimated voter turnout of 48%.

The fiery Caffan people celebrated in the streets last night, professing a new era in the city's long history and its freedom after nearly a century of Imperial rule. However, the festivities were soon overshadowed by the arrival of the Imperial Armed Forces; forces were stationed in the city to reassert the NSE's presence. Among the terrestrial presence was also a series of aggressive flyovers by a squadron of Imperial C-23 fighter jets, which the NSE Ministry of Defense denies the deployment of.

There is plenty of photographic evidence clearly depicting the presence of C-23 jets.

In response to the NSE's refusal to grant independence, Caffa has turned to other nations in the Shire, seeking help and recognition. Allies of the New Sammichian Empire have made it clear they will not recognize Caffa as a sovereign nation, and the NSE's position on the Shire United Nations Security Council will make it even more difficult for the province to gain recognition. States such as the Venezian protectorate of Riverwood and the Republic of Orange and Purple, however, have expressed their support for the independence movement and their willingness to recognize the province as a free nation.

Meanwhile, tensions have reached a critical height with the Imperial establishment, which still considers Caffa a part of its territory. High Chancellor Ritz-Khalifa called for the permanent dissolution of the provincial chancellery and emergency elections later this month. Voting and the subsequent results will be enforced by the IAF and the Emperor, who retains direct control of the city as a result of chancellery's suspension. The NSE has also been forced go on the offensive, dissuading other nations from supporting Caffa. It has imposed tough sanctions on the Republic of Orange and Purple, as well as an outright embargo on Riverwood. The Emperor and the Ministry of Justice has requested the extradition of the five Caffan legislators accused of spearheading the referendum bill from Laurelian. They all face criminal charges of treason in the NSE. Historically-strained relations between the two countries may prevent Laurelii cooperation, forcing the NSE to "extract" the perpetrators. This method was used in 2007 after former Magistrax Militae agent Caeto Vespanus was accused of selling confidential information to foreign powers; after Riverwood refused to return him to the NSE, he was allegedly kidnapped by former fellow Magistrax agents and transported back to Fulfwotz.

As for former Caffan Chancellor Leopardo Sciarra, his trial before the 1st District Court of Fulfwotz is set for January 15th. He was released on bail of $150,000, yet has been placed under house arrest in his Fulfwotzian Feverly Hills residence.
